Introduced in 1989 for the model year 1990, Chevy Lumina was a mid size sedan. The first generation of Lumina car started in 1990 and went on till 1994. The first generation of the car had four options for the engine. There was the 2.2 liter 122 l4 engine, 2.5 liter Iron Duke L4 engine, 3.1 liter LHO V6 motor and 3.4 liter LQ1 V6 engine. The car was available with 5 speed manual transmission or 3 speed 3T40 automatic transmission.
Second generation of Lumina started in 1991 and went on till 1997. This car had a 3.1 liter V6 engine which produced 160 hp and a torque of 185ft.lbf. Also an optional 3.4 liter V6 engine which was rated to produce 220 hp and a torque of 220 ft.lb was available. The 3.4 liter V6 engine was discontinued in 1998 and the series II 3800 engine was introduced. Power dropped to 200hp and the torque was 225ft.lbf. However, the performance of 3800 LTZ motor was slightly lower than its predecessor. But used 3800 LTZ engines are still available. The easiest source to buy a used Lumina engine is a local supplier or through the internet.
In the year 2000, General Motors introduced the front wheel drive model of Chevy Impala to replace Lumina. But there were some Luminas produced in 2001 for fleets but that also ended later. However, Holden Commodore was rebadged as Chevy Lumina and was sold in the Middle East and in some other Asian countries from 1998. This car that was sold till 2006 is regarded as the third generation Lumina.
From 2006 up to date the fourth generation Lumina is continuing. This is sold as Holden Commodore VE in Australia. The same car is rebadged and exported to Middle East and Asia as Lumina. It is equipped with a 3.6 liter motor as the standard. There is a sports car called the SS that comes with a 6.0 liter Alloytec V8 engine. The standard transmission of this car is a 6-speed manual but there is an optional 6 speed automatic transmission also.
