Launched in 1964-2011, Mustang is the third oldest nameplate and one of the most successful cars manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The 1964 model used a Ford Taurus V4 engine, which was later upgraded from 4.3-liter (260 cu in) to 4.7-liter (289 cu in). In 1968, the 4.9-liter (302 cu in) V8 Mustang engine was introduced. In 1986, Ford replaced carbureted engines with EFI (Electronic Fuel Injected) engines.

In the year 1994, the Mustang was majorly redesigned for the first time. The base model came with 3.8 OHV V6 (232 CID) engine. In 1996, the Ford Motor Company finally bid goodbye to 302 CID V8 engine after using it for nearly 30 years. The 4.6-liter SOHC V8 (281 CID) engine took its place in Mustang GT models. Between 1999 and 2004, while a split-port induction system was introduced in the standard 3.8-liter V6 engine, the output of the 4.6-liter V8 Mustang motor was increased from 225 bhp to 260 bhp.

In the production years of 2005 to 2009, the base model was equipped with 4.0-liter SOHC V6 (210hp) engine. 4.6-liter SOHC V8 engine with VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing)was used in the Mustang GT. In 2010, 4.6-liter V8 engine was revamped to increase its power from 300 hp to 315 hp. The engine of the base model remained the same. In 2011, all the engines of Ford Mustang were revised. A new 3.7-liter (227 cu in) V6 motor was introduced for the base model. GT model switched over to 5.0-liter (302.13 cu in) Coyote engine. Boss 302 engine was re-introduced in 2012 model of Ford Mustang. As compared to its competitors, Honda Accord (2.4-liter 177hp I4),  Nissan Z 370Z Coupe (3.7-liter 332hp V6) and Chevy Corvette (6.2-liter 430hp V8), Mustang 2013 (5.0-liter 444hp V8) is capable of providing better performance and higher fuel efficiency. Boss 302 motor was also used in the 1969 model of the car. Therefore, it can readily be found in auto shops that sell used parts.
