The GMC Denali was built as a competitor to the Cadillac Escalade, it is equipped with almost the identical interior and drivetrain. The first year of the GMC Denali was 1999 and GMC used the Chevy 350 Vortec engine. This engine superseded the throttle body injected version. Chevy changed the longblock focusing on the cylinder heads. This is where the most improvements for efficiency and power take place. Redesigned cylinder heads impacts how fuel is handled as well as exhaust.

The next generation Denali got the 6.0 liter V8 engine. This engine is used not only in the Escalade but also the 3/4 ton Silverado and GMC Sierra. When GM comes out with a bigger better motor, the Denali is always in line first. GM built its first 6.2 liter engine. This engine was built for power and durability. Then GM redesigned the 6.2 engine and the output went to over 400 horsepower. This engine is used in the Chevy Camaro, Silverado and the Sierra.

Here is a list of engines the GMC used in the Denali:

5.7 liter V8
6.0 liter V8
6.2 liter V8 gen 1
6.2 liter V8 gen 2 Ecotech
