Since 1972 the Civic has used engines that are very well built from the ground up. The Civic is the compact vehicle that was direct competition with the early production Toyota Corolla. It started out with an 1169 cc motor in a front wheel drive chassis that drove well and had good interior room. It was only available with a manual transmission. Over the years, Civic engines have really improved with the design changes and innovations that help keep these vehicles at the front of the market.

The following generation of the Civic has some major design changes, however the 3rd generation model really took off. The motor was an EW-1 1.5 single overhead cam and ran very well. It was a carbureted version that offered great mileage and performed as expected. In 1986 and 1987 the Civic offered a fuel injected version that offer more horsepower and was seen only in the 3 door hatchback model they called the SI version.

Then from 1988 thru 1995 the Civic drivetrain went through an overhaul again which owners really took a liking too.  This time they power the cars with a 1.5 D15 engine. A tried and true design that ran well and was very reliable and cheap to operate. After 1992, they introduced the vtec 1.6 D16Z6 motor, the engine is not only larger but offer the vtec solenoid on the cylinder head to add performance and power.  It was during this time period that the Civic really began to surpass some of its competition like the Nissan Sentra and the Toyota Corolla.

The 6th generation followed in the steps of the 4th and 5th generation. It offered 3 type engines, a 1.6 economy engine, 1.6 base production type and the D16 vtec motor.  After 2006 the Civic went with a 2.0 liter motor. This engine comes in different variations also. The new designed vtec engine for this series puts out more horsepower, torque and has a higher RPM tolerance than any of the previous models. As technology improves, the newer Civic engines have variable drivetrain, updated ignition systems and an improved lower end. All of this makes for a really sporty ride and a reliable car.  If you need a used Civic engine or a used Civic transmission just use our request form and email offers will come to you.
