The first generation Plymouth Trailduster was introduced in the market in the year 1974 and it was continued till 1993. The first and the second generation of the car did not have any major drive train modifications and hence can be compiled as a single generation. During production the Trailduster was known as the Rhino for its solid build and powerful 7.2 liter V8 engine. The engine produced a hefty 195 HP which was buffed up to 215 HP in future models. The engine was of the Chrysler LA variant and was used on the 1997 Dodge Ram and the Plymouth Trailduster. The cars featured a four speed manual and a three speed automatic transmission with an advanced torqueflite feature.
The third generation of the Trailduster (1999-2001) holds a significant place in the car’s history and this was built on the same platform as that of the new Dodge Ram. The car is available in two engine variants, a 5.9 liter and a 5.2 liter Magnum V8 motor. This car is available as a two wheel drive and its drive train features are similar to that of the 1996 Dodge Caravan. Similar Magnum V8 engine is also used on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Dodge Durango. Used Dodge engines are easily available at all workshops dealing in used cars and also over the internet.
The Ford Bronco and the Ford Expedition are also based on the same platform as that of the Plymouth Trailduster and the vehicles use the Chrysler designed Loadflite TF – 727A / B automatic transmission. The post 2000 models of the cars were upgraded with the A – 500 / A – 518 four speed automatic transmission. The cars used the Dana 44 front and rear axle from the first generations and this design had problems which were dealt with in future models. The third generation vehicles were also available in four wheel drive models and this featured the center axle discontinuation feature which is still used in the Dodge Ram and hence can be refitted.
