The BMW 8 series topped the BMW lineup as the biggest, most powerful car sold by the company. The 840 model came with a V8 engine and was sold from 1992 until 1999. The design of this engine was groundbreaking for the German automaker.

From 1992 until 1996, the 840 series used a 3.9 liter engine with an output of 282 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque and moved the 840 from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. BMW made 4,728 of the 840 model line with this engine for the European market and 1,649 for the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency gave it a rating of 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the road. In 1996, BMW increased the displacement to 4.4 liters increasing the horsepower to 295 and the torque to 310 lb-ft. The zero to 100 Km/h times dropped to 6.6 seconds. BMW made 3,075 models for Europe and 801 for the American market.

The engine features an all-aluminum engine block with sequential fuel injection and double overhead camshafts (DOHC). The use of DOHC’s is unusual in engines available in America. The camshaft opens each valve as the valve lets in fuel/air mixture and lets it out after combustion. Most engine manufacturers install the camshaft in the bottom of the engine and use a combination of push-rods and rocker arms to transfer the motion created by the lobe on the camshaft to the valve stem. The DOHC configuration takes out the push-rods and rocker arms and places the camshaft directly over the valves where it can press down on the valve stems directly. This decreases the amount of mass and the time it takes for the process to take place. This engine was built to compete in the American Domestic Market against such cars as the Cadillac Deville and the Lincoln Town Car. These American built cars use large V8 motors that offer good performance on the open highway.

Some points to consider

The BMW 840 series engine makes a good candidate for replacement. The 840 series engine isn’t plentiful; but, given the help provided by engine brokers, it can be found and used. Engine broker companies search the used engine market for qualified sellers and reliable engines. Also, make sure you get an estimate to repair the car before buying a used engine to make sure the value is not under water. Always check the reliability of the shop doing the work before ever taking your car in for repairs.
