Kia Motors of South Korea introduced the Kia Rio in 2000. It was a subcompact car that was available as a four door sedan and a five door hatch back. This front wheel drive car offered both diesel and also used gasoline engines. Rio’s predecessor was “Pride” which was a rebadged Ford Festiva. KIA Rio was the cheapest mass produced car to have been sold in the US. It had competitors in Ford Festiva, Hyundai Accent and the Chevy Sonic.
The first generation of Kia Rio was released in 2000 and the production went on until the second generation of the car arrived in 2005. Three engine options were offered and they had capacities of 1.3 liter, 1.5 liter and the 1.6 liter. The 1.6 liter one was a Mazda B Series engine. The second generation Kia Rio was released for the 2005 model year. It offered three different motor options. There was a 1.4 liter engine and a 1.6 liter Alpha II engine. The third generation Kia Rio was available in March 2011. This time the body styles of five door hatch back, four door sedan and also a three door hatch back were available. There were five different type engine options to choose from.
The smallest was the 1.2 liter Kappa engine. The next one was the 1.4 liter Gamma engine. There was also a 1.6 liter Gamma engine and it was incorporated with GDI technology. Finally, there were the two diesel engines with 1.1 liter and 1.4 liter sizes. These engines were coupled with 4-speed or 6-speed automatic transmission. A 6-speed manual transmission was available if you desired.
The third generation Kia Rio has won many awards for its performance and the many different features. In Slovakia, it has won the car of the year award for 2012. Also, it has won the car of the year award for the year 2011 awarded by Carsguide.
