Cadillac started building the Deville back in the 1950’s and it was going strong thru 2005. The more recent Devilles have enjoyed great upgrades to the engines but the journey has not been an easy one. In the late 70’s the Deville got a redesigned 425 ci engine that proved to be a solid engine. Through the early 80’s Cadillac offered a total of 5 different engines included some 4.1 liter engines that failed due to performance and reliability issues.

The later model Deville engines had their ups and downs. The 4.5 liter V8 engine was a good engine that replaced the 4.1 liter engine. Then the 4.9 liter was produced to replace the 4.5 liter engine. The Deville even got a diesel engine that was a horrible design and was soon stopped from production in all GM vehicles. Finally Cadillac offered the 4.6 liter DOHC Northstar engine. That has been a go to engine for Cadillac for years.
