The Dodge 2500 is part of the heavy-duty line of trucks produced by the Chrysler Group under the Dodge and Ram line. The truck is classified as a 3/4 ton truck but can handle a payload of up to 1,900 pounds in the basic configuration. The trucks boasts a towing capacity of about 10,000 pounds with the larger engines and four-wheel drive models capable of towing larger loads.

Dodge offers the truck in six basic engine configurations coupled to a number of automatic and manual transmissions. On the low end of the engine scale, the Dodge 2500 offers two V6 models. The Pentastar 3.6 liter V6 is the newest six-cylinder engine available for the Dodge 2500. The engine produces 305 horsepower and produces the best gas mileage for this class of vehicle. In the 2012 and prior model years the 3.7 liter PowerTech V6 was offered. This engine offered 310 horsepower but seemed to have lower fuel economy.
The 4.7 liter PowerTech V8 is the standard engine within the Dodge 2500 product line. This engine also boasted about 310 horsepower. The standard engine Dodge 2500 in the two-wheeled drive configuration commonly gets about 12 miles per gallon in the city and 18 mpg in highway conditions.
Drivers looking for more power have a couple of Hemi engine options to choose from. The 5.7-liter Hemi boasts about 395 horsepower. The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 increases the horsepower and torque but does reduce fuel economy.
The Dodge 2500 drivers have the option of stepping up to a diesel engine. The 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo-Diesel is considered one of the premier options for heavy-duty truck operators. The engine generates about 350 horsepower but offers high torque operations increasing the trucks hauling capacity. The engine is part of the Cummins B series of engines and utilizes an in-line six-cylinder configuration. This series of engines is used to power everything from boats to military trucks but is principally known as the power of the Dodge Ram trucks.
Dodge offers a wide variety of trim or décor packages for the 2500 truck line. These packages allow the buyer to choose a truck trimmed out to fit the Texan with the Lone Star package or the power truck enthusiast with the Power Wagon package. Other options include the Bighorn, Laramie, Outdoorsman or the standard ST or SLT packages. The product line also includes a standard cab two-wheel drive configuration as well as a crew cab, extended cab or extended crew cab configurations in the four-wheel drive configuration.
