The F-450 made its appearance in 1987 and the first generation continued till 1997. The Ford F-450 engines of this time were the 7.5 L (460 cubic inch) gasoline V8 and an optional 7.3 L (445 cubic inch) diesel V8. The second generation F-450s’ was launched in 1999 and was touted as the first true Super Duty truck and was continued up to 2007. Ford F-450 engines for the Super Duty generation were a 5.4 liter Triton V8, a 6.8 liter Triton V10, a 7.3 liter Power Stroke Diesel V8 (1999-2002) and a 6.0 liter Power Stroke Diesel V8 phased in  2003.The 6.0 Powerstroke Diesel was produced 325 horsepower and 560 foot-pounds of torque. This engine was upgraded in 2005 to boost torque to 570 foot-pounds, with power remaining at the same level. However these engines were withdrawn by Ford in 2006.

The third generation F-450 and the second generation Super Duty trucks (covering the entire range from F250 to F450) were produced from 2008 and continue till today. The engines used in the F450 can be utilized for similar other models like the F-350 and F-550. Ford F-450 engines carry over the 3-valve 5.4 liter (330.0 cu in) gasoline V8 SOHC as standard, with the 3-valve 6.8 liter (415 cu in) gas V10 as an option. The only engine made available for the F-450 Super Duty was the 6.4 liter V8 Power Stroke twin-turbo diesel.

For 2011, a new Ford F-450 engine in the form of a 6.7 liter diesel designed by Ford was introduced. With the 6.7 liter Power Stroke the F-450 is able to tow 24,400 pounds (11,100 kg) and has a maximum payload of 5,200 pounds (2,400 kg).
