Ford Motor Company produced Ford Torino as an intermediate car from 1968 to 1976. It offered quite a few choices on engines used. The standard motor fitted into this car was a 3.3.liter 6 cylinder one. For the sports model it was a 4.9 liter small block V8. Optional engines had capacities of 4.7 liters, 4.9 liters, 6.4 liters and 7.0 liters. Seven liter Cobra Jet FE engine was introduced in 1968. Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona were the competitors for Ford Torino. They competed in the NASCAR competition.
In 1969 the car underwent slight changes with its motor. In 1968 Ford had only 14 models of Torino cars but in 69 they increased it to 14. Ford Torino Cobra was one of the new models. All models except the new Cobras were equipped with motors that had 6 cylinders and a capacity of 4.1 liters. Standard engines on cobras were the 7.1 liter Cobra Jet engines. A used Cobra Jet engine could be bought even today.
For 1970 Ford came out with major changes to the engines of Torino. Only the 4.1liter l6 engine and the 4.9 liter Windsor V8 engine from 1969 were retained. All cars got disk brakes. The base engine for all models was 4.1 liter l6 ones. In 1973 oil crisis affected cars and 1974 was the last year for the 5.8liter Cobra jet engine and the 4-speed transmission. 5.8 liter Cobra Jet motor for sale is still available with some online sources.
In 1974 Torino got only a few minor changes. Federal regulations required catalytic converters installed on all cars and this reduced the power. As a remedy all the models of Torino got 5.8 liter base engines. 1976 was the final year for Ford Torino.
