The mid-size four door sedan KIA Magnetis was sold with the name of KIA Optima when it was released in the US in 2000. However, when it was released to European markets, it was marketed as KIA Magnetis. When KIA released the second generation it was called KIA Lots and KIA K5 in South Korea. KIA Magnetis has many competitors such as Hyundai Sonata GLS, Dodge Dart Limited and Buick Park Avenue.
The first generation KIA Magnetis was equipped with one of the three engine options, there was the 2.2 liter motor which could generate 149 horsepower. They also offered a four cylinder inline engine. 2.5 liter and 2.7 liter engines were the other choices available. The 2.7 liter V6 produces 185 horsepower. In 2005, the second generation Magnetis was released. This time it was equipped with a 2.0 liter engine which produced 145 horsepower. There was also a diesel version and it was a 2.0 liter CRDI VGT engine capable of producing 140 horsepower and lots of torque.
The third generation of KIA Magnetis was offered in 2011 and is still in production. The car was completely redesigned for this edition. There were six engine options with it. The smallest was the 1.7 liter engine that uses turbo diesel technology to offer 136 horsepower. There is a 2.0 liter engine also and was built to provide a bit more performance while maintaining economy. The 2.0 liter turbo engine is able to produce a whopping 274 horsepower. The 2.4 liter engine is available with GDI technology.
A hybrid version of KIA Magnetis with the label of Optima has been released in the US market in 2011 and it has come second only to Toyota Prius in sales.
