Understanding Your Engine

Before you begin looking for used engines, it’s important that you understand the basics of engine failure and replacement.

What Are the Signs of Engine Failure?

Even if you don’t understand exactly how your engine works, it can be easy to tell when it’s failing if you know what to look for.

  • These are the most common signs of engine failure:
  • Check Engine Light: This is the simplest way to tell that something isn’t quite right with your engine. When the check engine light comes on, it’s time to go to a mechanic and figure out what’s going on.
  • Odd Noises: Popping, grinding, backfiring, hissing, clanking — all these sounds (and any other suspicious noises) can be signs of a serious engine problem.
  • Stalling: If you’ve ever had to restart your car at a stop light because it simply refuses to accelerate, then you know how frustrating stalling can be. Unfortunately, stalling can be a sign that your engine is in need of repair or replacement.
  • Jerking and Surging: If your car starts jerking, surging or shaking while you’re driving, it’s likely that your engine is malfunctioning and will need to be assessed by a professional.
  • Suspicious Smells: A noticeable scent of burning rubber, exhaust or smoke (especially if you can detect them when you’re inside the car) can be clear indicators of engine trouble.
  • Smoke: If your car starts spewing smoke, don’t ignore it. Blue smoke can signal that oil is leaking into places it shouldn’t be, while white smoke can indicate that water condensation or antifreeze is making its way into the fuel supply. If either problem remains untreated, they can result in irreversible engine damage.

Quick-onset engine problems aren’t the only causes of engine failure, however – the older a car is, and the more mileage it has on it, the more likely it is that the engine will wear out simply from age and heavy use.

So, if you have an older car or a car with a high number of miles on it, it’s important that you regularly get the engine checked on by a professional.

Should You Replace Your Engine or Your Car?

So, you’ve noticed that something is wrong with your car, visited a mechanic and been informed that your engine is kaput. At this point, you have two options:

  1. Buy a new car.
  2. Replace your engine with a new or used engine.

Of course, you probably wish you didn’t have to do either, but you’ll have to decide sooner or later.

If you answer yes to any of the following questions, you should probably consider buying a new car:

  • Do you dislike the car?
  • Does the car have other major problems outside of the engine?
  • Will fixing all the car’s issues be more expensive than buying a new car?

On the other hand, if you answer yes to any of these questions, you should consider replacing your engine:

  • Do you like or love the car?
  • Is the car functional outside of the engine?
  • Will fixing all the car’s issues be less expensive than buying a new car?

What Are the Different Types of Engines?

The cost of replacing your engine with a new or used engine will vary depending on the type of engine you have.

In general, there are two major engine types:

  • Short Block: Short block engines are incomplete. In other words, even though they come with a crank, cam pistons, and connecting rods, they’ll still need to have other internal parts installed, such as gaskets, cylinder heads, and an oil pump.
  • Long Block: Long block engines are nearly complete. This means that there are very few additional parts they’ll need installed, all of which are external. These can include an oil pan, valve covers, and a timing cover.

If you’re looking for lots of opportunities to customize your vehicle’s engine to your liking, then a short block engine is likely the best choice for you.

However, since short block engines also take much longer to install and require the purchase of additional (and often costly) parts, long block engines are the best choice for economically minded drivers.

Of course, there are two other major types of engines:

  • Diesel Engines, which use high-pressure compression to ignite the fuel.
  • Gas Engines, which use sparks to ignite the fuel.

Keep in mind, though, that the engine your car is designed for is likely the same type of engine you should replace it with. If you bought a car with a diesel engine and want to replace it with a gas engine, the process will be much more involved and costly than replacing it with a diesel engine, and vice versa.

Replacing Your Engine

So, you’ve determined that you’re going to replace your worn out engine instead of purchasing a new car, and you’ve also identified the type of engine you’ll need to replace it with. Now what?

Rebuilding vs. Replacing

There’s one more question remaining: Should you opt for an engine rebuild instead of an engine replacement?

In general, it’s more cost effective to replace an engine than it is to rebuild it. Why? Because installing individual parts piece by piece takes mechanics a long time to do, which means more money will be coming out of your wallet.

How Much Will a Used Engine Cost?

In general, a used engine will cost between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the make and model of the car in question.

If you opt to purchase a high-performance engine, that can drive the cost well over the $5,000 mark and may cost as much as $10,000 to $15,000.

Let’s take a look at an example. Consider the Ford F150, America’s most popular truck. Depending on year and mileage, a used Ford F150 engine can cost between $800 and $3,500. A high-quality engine with low miles will usually cost more than a high mileage engine.
